THE IMPORTANCE OF PROPER MANAGEMENT
The first and most essential stage for making recycling more effective is sorting at source, which is both a responsibility and an obligation for all of us. Separating waste into distinct categories at the point of generation, and disposing of them in the appropriate bins, contributes significantly to their proper management.
Once the materials enter the company’s management facilities, the sorting process begins, separating them into categories that can be further utilized. Some of these include paper, cardboard, plastic bottles (for water and detergents), food packaging plastics, bags and nylon, metals, iron, wood, etc.
The separated materials are then baled and sent for recycling to licensed final receivers, with the aim of producing new products.

The materials unsuitable for recycling are classified as residual waste and collected separately. They are then forwarded for mechanical processing in order to be directed to licensed facilities for energy recovery and to incineration plants or cement industries, used as fuel (RDF – Refuse Derived Fuel).
The benefits of proper management of mixed residual waste and mixed packaging waste include:
-
Reduction of landfill usage (sanitary landfills)
-
Conservation of natural resources and raw materials
-
Energy savings
-
Contribution to society by ensuring a clean environment for future generations
-
Creation of new jobs and strengthening of the Greek economy, since a large portion of waste is exported abroad
-
Promotion of the circular economy, where each waste stream can be recycled, remanufactured, or used for energy production
